The successful candidate will travel to clients primarily in the Western Virginia Region to evaluate safety practices in the field and recommend improvements to client safety programs. This individual will possess strong analytical abilities, exceptional communication skills, report writing skills, and a solid construction safety background.


  • Prefer 3 years construction safety experience
  • Degree in safety or technical field. If no degree an additional 2 years safety experience is desired.
  • Knowledgeable of OSHA Construction and General Industry regulations

Job Summary

The Director, Research Safety Programs leads and coordinates the research safety efforts of the Research Institute at Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). This position provides vision and oversees the development, implementation, and administration of efficient and effective biological, laboratory, and chemical safety programs. This position also oversees the shipment of institutional dangerous goods of the Research Institutes Shipping Core (RISC) and provides administrative support for the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) which reviews and approves the use of recombinant DNA and biohazards. Leads continuous quality improvement initiatives for the research safety programs to ensure programs are in compliance with applicable regulations, guidances, policies and procedures; are customer-service oriented; and are implemented in an efficient way to support the research and enterprise strategies.

The Director, Research Safety Programs reports to the AVP, Research Compliance & Regulatory Affairs for issues relating to the Research Institutes biological and chemical safety programs and for all program administrative matters. This position shall coordinate with the Director of the Environmental Health and Safety and Occupational Health Departments for all environmental health and safety issues that fall outside of the laboratory chemical and biological safety programs, including institution-wide environmental health and safety programs and with the Emergency Preparedness Manager for all Research Institute emergency preparedness program issues.
