Join us to learn about environmental management systems (EMS) and what it takes to implement a strong environmental program at any facility.  DEQ’s Morgan Goodman will provide an EMS overview, with a focus on the early stages of implementation, and discuss strategies for developing a successful environmental program at any level. Smithfield’s Corporate EMS Coordinator, Ruth DeBrito, will discuss their environmental management system and its benefits.

Speakers:
Morgan Goodman, Pollution Prevention Specialist, Virginia DEQ

Mrs. Goodman has been with the Virginia DEQ for 3 years in the Office of Pollution Prevention. Prior to working for DEQ Morgan worked with the federal government for 7 years on environmental programs for Customs and Border Protection and the Drug Enforcement Administration. In her role at DEQ, Morgan is a part of the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program implementation team and has also coordinated the Pollution Prevention Case Study project. In addition to working with external facilities, Mrs. Goodman has spearheaded the renewal of DEQ’s internal Environmental Management System (EMS) and leads the Agency and Central Office EMS Teams, facilitating continual improvement of DEQ’s environmental impacts. Mrs. Goodman has a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Roger Williams University and a Master of Arts in Environmental Resource Policy from the George Washington University.

Ruth DeBrito, Corporate EMS Coordinator, Smithfield
Native to Central Virginia, Ms. DeBrito has lived in Tidewater for past 20 years.  Ms. DeBrito graduated from Longwood College with a double major in Biology and Chemistry and the American Military University with a Masters of Environmental Science.  She has worked at Smithfield since 1996, and helped to start and grow the Environmental Management System, started in 2001 and certified in 2003. This was a first of its kind in the meat industry, and has opened markets in Europe and worldwide which recognize ISO standards, such as the ISO 14001 EMS standard, as basic business practices.
